According to The New York Times, girls age 8-12 rank fashion design their #1 dream career. Here at The Craft Lounge, we’re all about opportunities for young kids to be creative. We’re teaming up with author Marjorie Galen for this afternoon of sewing, refreshments, and fun. Each child will work with Ms. Galen to create a doll-sized dress and will go home with a signed copy of The Fashion Designer’s Handbook and Fashion Kit, so more designs can be completed at home!
Ms. Galen is an experienced craft-book author, writer and instructor who starts with the basics, teaching kids about sketching, stitches, fabrics, sewing tools, where to get inspiration, and more! In The Fashion Designer’s Handbook and Fashion Kit, she offers up 33 projects ranging from simple no-sew dresses to more challenging outfits with accessories like belts and messenger bags.
The step-by-step instructions are accompanied by photographs of the finished designs and most include suggestions for modifying the projects to make each outfit unique. As the fashionista’s skills progress, she can design and sew her own clothes; the last chapter includes instructions for three “girl-size” projects.
Please join us on Friday, January 11, at 7:30pm, as we make an afghan for one of the families in Newtown, CT. We will make 8″x8″ squares and then assemble them. Our finished afghan will be shipped to Knitters for Newtown, one of the many Ravelry groups offering ways to share some love with this town in the form of knitting (or crochet).
Squares will be 8″ x 8″ and can be either knitted or crocheted with machine washable worsted yarn — choose something from our stash or bring your own.
We will assemble completed squares at The Craft Lounge on Friday, February 22 at 7:30pm, so if you can’t make it on 1/11, please feel free to make a square (or a few) and join us for the assembly or drop them off before 2/22.

Here at TCL, we’re big fans of our new Keurig coffee maker, but we hate to throw something away when we can upcycle it into something fabulous. So with the holidays right around the corner, and K-Cups® so perfectly ornament-sized, we thought… how about a little holiday-themed contest?
Design and make an ornament out of one or more K-Cups®*, and submit it to us by 12/12/12 MONDAY, 12/17. We will separate the submissions into two categories: kids and adults. The winner in the adults category will receive the handcrafted TCL mug of his or her choice, and the winner of the kids category will receive a certificate for a free craft workshop (not to mention bragging rights!).

Stuck at home with kids and no power? We feel your pain. Tomorrow (11/1) TCL will host a free drop-in craft (beaded stretch bracelets). Parents can warm up, have a hot drink, and charge phones while kids — and grownups who want to — get crafty. 12:00-3:00pm.
